ConsSpider arms distort and chain rings warp
ProsCheap
I bought this about 6 months ago and over that time the chainrings run out of true down to the spider arms distorting. I would like to think that its my raw power but at 54yrs of age I doubt that. My Campag chainset, that I have run for years still run true. Dont buy it, you will only end up buying again.
Does the job.

Bought to replace old 40/52 Siguno crankset on my 70 Falcon Giro D Italia (Eddy Merckx) Looks very much in keeping with originality of bike and lower gearing makes it far more pleasant riding round the hills of Ribble Valley.

ProsAmazing value good quality.
I bought this chainset to replace the one on my old road bike. The main reason I did this was to improve the gear ratio from 42/52t changed to 34/50t compact. I found this chainset easy to fit. I used a new Shimano 68x107mm bottom bracket the chainline is good but I think 68x110mm as recommend would have been better. Having used the bike for 100 miles or so I can't fault this chainset. I think it's a great product at an amazing price. Sjs cycles have done it again brilliant service from a brilliant company. Ten out of ten. Definitely would recommend this chainset and sjs.

The ordering, processing and delivery of an SJS alloy square taper compact chainset went very smoothly and seems to be a well made piece of kit. However, SJS deserve some criticism for stating categorically that this product requires a 110mm BB. Many customers, including me, have found that this statement is simply not true and therefore misleading. Like other customers, I had to source a 103mm BB to get a reasonable chainline. I think SJS should edit their product information for this item.

ProsStiff, light, good looking, cheap
This is an excllent chainset, especialy at this price. It is almost an exact copy of a 1990s Campag Veloce I have. I used a 113mm BB to get the chain line I need. This is always an issue with square taper chain sets in that the BB length you need may change, always budget for a new one although they are very cheap.
Don't listen to the remarks about the 5th fastener being behind the crank arm, this is a good thing and means you only need 4 arms. It is awkward to get to but you only change chainring so very 5k miles so it isn't an issue.
Mine weighs 760grams which is good at this price.
Good Quality, But Beware Of The Large Chainring Offset.

ConsLarge chainring offset (may require change of Bottom Bracket)
ProsGood quality
This chainset replaced the 52/42 setup on an 80's road bike. Similar to a previous reviewer, I had to change to a 103mm bottom bracket to get the rings near to the original chainline. The new chainline is still about 4mm outside the optimal position, but it is usable with sensible combinations of front and rear gears (i.e. only use the smallest 3 rear sprockets with the big chainring).
The quality of manufacture seems fine.
The value for money is somewhat undermined by the need to purchase and fit a new bottom bracket.
As noted by another reviewer, the design does seem to have a flaw in that one of the spider arms (and therefore ring retaining bolt) is behind the crank arm, which will make it fiddly to swap a chain ring.

bought this and a new 110BB to fit it on. previous one was 120mm
fitted this on a 110 mm BB
chain rings were further away from frame than previous 52 42 crank.on its 120 mm BB
so that makes chain line and alignment worse. so i got a 103mm BB and that improved it a little. could do with a crank that sets the rings a little nearer the frame....was further away than origina set u even with the 103 mm BB

but i cant find another compact chainring crank set that sets the rings any nearer the frame . the bike is an old 1964 falcon frame...531 reynolds etc , been in family since new so that is why i am keen to keep it going and get up hills in peak district as i am now a pensioner

For 65 mm bb shell
By
11 Jul 2023
Hi - my 1970s bike has a bottom bracket shell measuring 65 mm. I would like to use this chainset to replace the original, but I note the square taper cartridges are for a 68 mm shell. Would one still work on my bike without modification? Thanks.
If you use 2x 17701S1.5 spacers on the drive side of the bottom bracket shell then this will allow you to use a 68mm shell bottom bracket. SK 12/07/23

By

Hello, without knowing the chain line of your system we cannot suggest a front derailleur, however, generally, any road front derailleur for 7/8 speed systems and the ability to work with a 34/50 chainset should be ok.

Hope this helps,

Replacing 136mm cottered bb
By
20 May 2020
Hi, my current (old, cottered) BB is about 136mm and the BB shell is 68mm. The current single chainring is 45mm from middle of the BB. I am going to install this chain set but wondered if I needed a 110mm or smaller axle BB to go with it for similar chain line. It's English threaded 68mm shell that in at the moment. Also would you happen to know if there is a front derailleur for this that would clamp to an older and smaller frame tube of 27mm? Thankyou.
Keep with the 110mm b/b, wrt front mech, I severely doubt your seat tube is 27.0 external, more likely 28.6mm. WERE it 27.00 your only choice would be to shim a 28.6, the Sunrace R80 8 Speed Double Front Derailleur - 28.6/31.8mm (SJS Cycles part number : 37639) comes with a shim to 28.6mm RT

By

Prefer to change the above to the 50/34 and I am assuming that this alloy chainset would be compatible with my present bottom bracket considering what it would replace?
We would not have a 52/42 I am afraid, 50/34 is the most likely option that would be suitable. In most cases these will need a 110mm JIS Sqaure Taper BB, this will depend on the chainline you require.

Compatible chainguard / chain protection ?
By
16 Sep 2019
Dear SJS,
Is there a compatible chain guard for this crankset (something to prevent clothes getting snagged / stained)
There is not anything as the chainring has no fittings. The only thing we have seen it using longer bolts, spacers and something like - SJS Cycles part number : 11081

This will likely require some modification to the bash as the pin on the ring / the back of the arm may foul.

With this chainset work with a 9 speed chain?
By
04 Sep 2017
I see that a previous person asked if the chainset will work with a 10 speed chain and you replied that it would not because it is designed for 8 speed. Can you say if it is likely to work with a 9 speed chain?
Alternatively are you able to measure the thickness of the chainring so that I can compare it to the 9 speed one that I currently have?
Thank you.
Hello,

As this is designed to be used with 7-8 speed chains we would not recommend this.

Thanks.
Can I use this with 113mm Bottom bracket
By
21 Aug 2017
I have a Boardman Road Sport and it comes with a 113mm square taper BB. I note a number of the comments mention a 110mm BB is required. Will this crankset fit onto the 113mm BB?

If it is possible to use the 113mm BB what problems (if any) might I encounter using the original 113mm BB?

Many thanks.
Hi,

Although this chainset is recommended for use with a 110mm bottom bracket it could still be fitted to a 113mm if you so wished. All it would do is push the drive-side cranks out by 2mm and therefore move the chainrings and chainline over by 2mm as well.

Thanks.

Hi,

These cranks will take 9/16" pedals which are the standard size now.

This chainset requires a JIS bottom bracket. Most of our bottom brackets and chainsets are JIS unless they state otherwise. All of our ISO bottom brackets are shown clearly as ISO.

Alternate Big Ring
By
22 Jun 2015
Hi, Would it be possible for you to ship this with a smaller big ring, like a 44t instead of the 50t?
Hi,

These chainsets are sold as they are so we would not be able to swap the chainring out for you I'm afraid. They use a 110mm BCD chainring so you could swap the chainring out yourself if you wanted to.

Thanks.

Compatibility With A Brompton Bike
By
24 Feb 2015
Hi. I want to fit this chainset on my brompton. Would this be compatible with it?
You say that this bottom bracket "Requires 110mm square tapered bottom bracket". The Brompton bottom bracket measures 119 mm. Do you think this would be a problem?

Regards Pedro.
Hi

We've never tried to fit this chainset on a Brompton so we wouldnt be able to advise whether it would work or not. The 110mm bottom bracket advise is in regards to its use with a standard derailleur system however we have found with other chainsets that there is a risk of the chainring hitting the frame on the bike.

I would like to try this alternative as I live in S Wales where there are lots of hills and I am 65 years of age but really enjoy road riding
Hi,

This chainset requires an 110mm square taper bottom bracket, if your bike has one of these already fitted then it will be a straight swap (you'll still need to adjust the front derailleur) if it does not have this type of bottom bracket you'll need to purchase one to allow you to fit this chainset.

Use With A Tange Bb
By
12 May 2014
I have a "spare" tange BB, 113mm, box says standard 4 flats, ISIS spline. Will this be suitable for this chainset? Many thanks
Hi,

This chainset requires a square taper bottom bracket, ISIS splined bottom brackets were a completely different fitting to square taper chainsets. You'll need to confirm it has a square taper fitting and isn't the ISIS fitting like SJSC product 25572.

Thanks.

Bb Axle Length
By
08 Jan 2014
hi
wikey here again.

i have started trying to fit these chainring cranks to the old 1960 bike i am using.

having taken the current cranks off the bike and properly measured the bb axle it is 115 or 116 mm end to end without the bolts on it.

having compared the relative position of both cranks on it, i really need a BB axle that would be 6 or 7 mm shorter on the chainrings side, as the compact chainring crank needs to be this much nearer the frame.

is there anything suitable ??

also are the BBs handed with different lengths of axle protruding from the frame as thismay help a bit..??

grateful for any suggestions you may have
wikey
Hi,

As I said in my previous reply the 110mm version is required for this chainset. This length is the overall length of the protruding axle, the longer the length the more the axle sticks out from the shell, the length of the shell does not change between these sizes. Square taper bottom brackets don't have separate axles so an entire new 110mm unit will be needed. You will also need to measure the bottom bracket shell on you bike to determine which 110mm bottom brackets will fit. This will most likely be between 68mm and 70mm.

Thanks.
110 Mm Bottom Bracket
By
18 Dec 2013
hi
it says on description of this chaninset that it requires a 110mm square tapered bottom bracket. well you dont seem to sell one on your site and also most bikes are 120 plus to about 140 plus. so is this really the case that it requires a 110mm bottom bracket. i am trying to replace a 52 42 chainset on an old 1960s english falcon frame. it all works fine, i just want lower gears being a 65 years old. the current axle length is about 135mm
will this chainset work with it?
thanks
wikey

Hi,

All modern bikes use much smaller bottom bracket lengths due the newer designs of chainset which have all the rings placed on an extended spider. Most of our bottom brackets have a 110mm option, but as I don't know the shell length of your BB I can't recommend any straight away. The chainset will work with what you are trying to achieve.

Thanks.
