ConsNeed patience and other tools
ProsGood quality
All you need to replace the rear hinge pin on your Brompton. Yes you need to buy the reamer separately and you need a tap and some patience but it worked really well. See previous review from Charles_f about where to purchase your own reamer from as that’s what we used and it was ??
Useful, but you need an unavailable tool

ConsUseless without the tools
ProsOriginal parts
The kit comes with the new parts you need and a useful allen key of the right size (note that the rear hinge is 100% imperial and a metric 4mm allen key will not do). However, you need a 7/16" tap and a long piloted 3/8" reamer to accurately prep the bushes after fitting them. Brompton used to sell the two together, and still do in some EU shops, but not to UK customers. Unless you bought the tools when they were still sold (I was able to borrow them), this kit is of limited use.

*An M10 tap is more likely to rip through the bushes instead of pulling them out, but works if they're not corroded in place
All worked fine with the right tools

ConsYou will need the right tools before attempting the job
ProsAll the parts you need
After years of changing bushes and bearing on my mountainbikes I had amassed most of the tools needed for this job but picked up a reamer from Amazon. All worked just take your time. I errd on the side of caution and reamed the bushes a couple of time to get the right result.
So rewarding to fit...but so glad I'd bought appropriate tools

I recommend this product
ConsNot totally straightforward, and a special tool needed to ream accurately.
ProsGood as new and very satisfying
Transformational and so satisfying. Two tools that made the difference. A 5/32 hex bit with a square drive so that I could use the ratchet lever from my socket set to undo the screws . So much easier than drilling. And an 'adjustable piloted reamer' from 'drill service'. With care and patience working out how to use the beautiful tool properly, it did a perfect perfect job. Not cheap at £40, but better than getting it wrong (part RHANDEXP-5AP 21/64-3/8 Piloted Adjustable Hand Rmr)

Do I buy the Brompton reaming kit plus a titanium spindle?
By
22 May 2020
Hi, I’m planning to get my 15 year old broom powder coated so will need to fully dismantle. I assume that to detach and then refit the rear triangle (titanium on my Brompy) I’ll need to buy the reaming kit plus a titanium spindle. Is that right? And will I need any other specialist tools (I have a good general cycling toolkit) to fully dismantle?

Thanks

Graeme
You can do this in a few ways;

The quickest is to use a small blowtorch to heat the bolt for 10-15 seconds, it will then simply unscrew. Pop a 5mm allen key in that hole, anchor it downward holding the spindle in place and repeat on the other side. You will need to remove the bushings using a tap; screw into the bush, then tap it out from the other side with the old spindle. Repeat for the other side.

When rebuilding, simply use a small hammer to tap the bushing into the frame on either side - you will hear / see when its fully home; take care, do not belt it and ensure its straight. You then ream to the correct size, fit the new spindle and screws - with blue/medium loctite.

The spindle fitted is steel, if you want titanium you need the kit and the new ti spindle.
