ConsHeavy - but does that matter on a casual tandem?
ProsGood option for a rear brake with a left side threaded hub
Unit arrive in ~ 1 week. Fits up well to a late 90's vintage Burley Rumba tandem.

Fitted this up to enable the stoker to have some braking capability.

I could not believe it, but the Karasawa Screw on Tandem Drum Brake replaces the Arai drum brake on my Schwinn Tandem perfectly. The Arai is no longer made and replacement parts are hard to find and very expensive. I had a mechanic install it. He said there was not a tool in the box for the install, but that didn't seem to be a problem for him as he has worked on drum brakes before. Delivery to the US was not a problem and arrived quicker then I thought it would.

ConsLack of fitting instructions
ProsIt does the job.
Bought this specifically for a two week trip to the Vivarais/Causse areas of France in September. It was rather fiddly to fit, lacking any clear instructions, but I got there eventually. I'd been caught out a couple of years ago with tandem/trailer and only two rim brakes which resulted in walking down most long descents. This did not please the stoker. But the Chinese brake proved invaluable and using a combination of all three brakes (2 X XTR + drum), we were able to descend slowly/safely, all the hills encountered. Admittedly didn't have a trailer this time, just four panniers. It did squeak occasionally, but what brake doesn't?

ConsSlightly less pretty.
ProsReadily available.
I was nervous that being a generic Chinese product this may be inferior in some way to the renowned but obsolete Arai product. Although it appears less swich and has a chromed rather than matt black finish it seems to me to do a fine job, without any noticeable fade or other problems that I worried over.

So far maintenance free after a couple of months use on average English roads. Hopeful it should have a long life and no problem with spares or replacement parts!

No, it will not as the hub has no provision to fit this brake.

Will it mount on a Sturmey SX-RB3 hub
By
20 Oct 2019
On my bike, the rear Wheel comes with a band brake which is mounted on a sturmey archer hub (SX-RB3)
Is it possible to mount that karasawa drum brake instead of my band brake (end of life)
Best regards

Can this be screwed to a six-bolt disc hub?
By
29 Jun 2018
Just wondering if the two holes either side of the threaded centre of this hub will enable it to be screwed to a standard six-bolt disc hub (I can't find any info online on the spacing and diametre of these two holes).
No, this will not fit a 6 bolt disc hub.

Thanks

Hub Compatibility
By
08 Jan 2017
Hi,
I have a Thorn Adventure purchased in 2005 with a 48 spoke rear wheel consisting a CR18 Rim and a Shimano hub identified as FH-HF08 and is threaded on the opposite side to the freewheel. Is this hub compatible with the Karasawa hub break and where is the third brake lever normally located. Thanks
Hi,

This screw on drum brake uses the same thread as your hub so should fit fine. There a few different options for the brake lever, you can mount a 3rd lever to the main set of handlebars, the stoker can have a working brake lever or there is the option of using a cable splitter to allow one brake lever to operate two brakes.

Thanks.
Karasawa Servo 90 Brake

Do you have a Safety Brake for my old Karasawa Servo 90 Brake. It's for my E-GO electric bike.
Hi,

This Karasawa drum brake is the only product from Karasawa we're able to get hold of I'm afraid.

Thanks.
Brake Activation
By
23 Jun 2015
I'm new to the drum brakes, and have an older Santana (1989 Visa I think), that has the threading on the rear hub. I presume this will fit, but how do you activate the brake? Do I need a lever and cable kit?
Hi,

You will need to purchase a brake lever and cable to operate this brake. Drum brakes use the same cable pull as calliper and cantilever brakes so you will need a brake lever suited to one of those.

Thanks.
Will This Fit A Shimano Fh Hf05 Hub?
By

The existing Arai is giving me trouble. Will this fit the Shimano hub?
Thanks.
Paul
Hi,

This tandem drum brake fits to the same threads as an Arai would so this should fit your hub fine.

Thanks.
