Details
SON 28 is a hub dynamo universally approved for all wheel sizes from 16" to 29". The rated output is achieved in the 700c (622)-wheel at approx. 16 km/h (SONdelux at 19 km/h). Thus, SON 28 is recommended if a lot of light is required at low speed or when either devices are to be operated or their batteries charged.

The new SON 28 is reminiscent of the SONdelux in structure and looks. In the standard version (non-disc), the flange distance is enlarged by 12 mm and the bearing distance by 10 mm as compared to the SONdelux. Disc versions are available as 6-hole and as center lock.

Compared to the SON 28 klassik (model years 2000 to 2011), the power consumption when no load applied is reduced by approx. 15% and the weight by 140g.

Guarantee period: 5 years
Included in delivery: Skewer and connectors for the headlight

I recommend this product
ConsPrice,
ProsBuild quality, performance
This is absolutely top notch dynamo hub. Built up on an Open Pro rim, there is almost no discernable weight difference vs my Mavic Aksium front wheel. Build quality is excellent, local bike shop described it as "a piece of jewelry :)" Paired with a B&M Cyo front light, it's awesomely bright. (on a par with the Cree / DX LED light I have). You can notice a tiny amount of drag if you spin the wheel in your hand, but completely unnoticeably on the bike.

SON 28 vs. SON delux
By
04 Aug 2021
Trying to work out what dynamo would be best for me. I understand that the 28 is a little heavier and has slightly more drag than the delux. Also that the 28 generates more power at a lower speed than the delux.
It's for a touring bike, so things like the 87g difference in weight are neglible. Is there a discernible difference with the drag? The aim would be to have it hooked up with a USB charger when cycling and so using dynamo powered lights would probably be minimal, depending on the weather.
With ±15kg of luggage, I'm not really going to be cycling any faster than 10-12mph. What would be your thoughts. recommendations?
Thank you.
Son 28 will be best for a loaded bike, the Delux is really only worth it if your ONLY running led lights or USB charging- not both at the same time. The 28 has a more powerful generator which is more suited to lower speed use- ie loaded touring bikes.

The Delux is best suited for lightweight ultra-distance race bikes where speeds are high, and every gram counts.

What speed is required to power front, rear lights and a Garmin unit?
By
21 May 2019
I bought (from SJS) this unit, and set it up with Son Dynamo front and rear lights, and a Garmin Explore.

Do you know the speed required to provide power to both lights and charge a Garmin?
Hi, sorry Son don't have that information, however we estimate about 17 mph. Thanks 22/05/2019
Recommendations For Thorn Sherpa
By

Is this the best option to use for a Thorn Sherpa - 26" wheel - 36 hole? Which other hub dynamos are suitable?
Hello,

This would indeed be the best option.

Thanks.
What'S The Main Difference Between The Son 28 And The 28 Klassik
By
03 Jan 2017
Hi,

The SON 28 Klassik is the older model that was superseded by the the current SON 28. The main differences were that when nothing is running off of the hub the drag has been reduced by 15% and that the weight of each hub has been dropped by approximately 140grams.

Thanks.
Can You Run Both Front And Rear Light Off A Schmidt Son 28?
By
27 May 2016
.
Hi,

Rear dynamo lights always piggy back off of the front light rather than being plugged directly into the hub. You can run a set of lights as well as a charging device with the Son 28 as it has one of the best outputs of any Dynamo hubs.

Thanks.
Dynamo Hub And Light Compatibility
By
04 Apr 2016
Hi can you confirm if the SON 28 Dynamo hub will work fine with the Schmidt Edelux High Power LED headlight?
Hi, yes the SON 28 will work absolutely fine with a Schmidt Edelux LED light, when choosing the light however do not select the DC version as this is for electric bikes only. Regards
Why Is The Black Son 28 £10 More Expensive Than Silver?
By
04 Feb 2014
Hi,

It just the manufacturing process is longer and more expensive compared to the basic silver option, this is the same reason the Red anodised option is another £10 more again.

Thanks.
