In the 80s and 90s these were fitted as standard by many famous frame builders. I remember all the Mercians in my local bike store in Cambridge (Howes) came with Tange Levin headsets. These headsets last a long time, are well sealed from water and dirt and because they have bearing races can be easily dismantled and cleaned and re greased. These have ground high precision bearing races. I've never thought there is any difference in quality between these and a Campagnolo Record headset, made by that company in its heyday. Great choice for a steel frame restoration of course.

Would this fit a Dawes super galaxy (2003-4 model)

I am very interested in this to fit to my Dawes Super Galaxy. But would like to know how available a replacement bearing unit is if needed. The headset fitted at present is a shimano LX with a BC1 inch bearing which know seams totally unavailable to purchase. Any advice as to whether this unit or any other will fit would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance Stefan

This will fit your bike, the Shimano headset you have has a stack height of 37.6mm, this headset is 33.3mm so you'll need to fit an extra spacer(s) such as Headset Spacer - 1 Inch - Alloy - Silver (22313) replacement ball cages are not available but these headsets can be assembled using loose balls. RT

my bike needs a new fork and has a campagnolo chorus headset fitted will the crown race off this one fit ?

Is this suitable for a 1980 Holdsworth Mistral frame please?

Hi,

Unfortunately as we have never sold your frame we have now way of knowing if this headset is suitable or not. You're going to need to measure that your frame's head tube has an internal diameter of 30.2mm to accept the cups and the crown race seat on your forks is 26.4mm to accept the crown race.

Most of our headsets including this one come with only an ISO 26.4mm crown race. The only headset we stock with a JIS 27.0mm crown race is the M:Part Elite which is SJSC part number 33893.
