ProsExtra drop above 57mm. Robust. Good price
I have bought several sets of these for various restorations and always found them to be well made and robust. Available in nut or Allen key fit they are pretty much the only option for converting some frames built for 27 X 1 1/4 inch wheels to 700c because they have the extra length if your frame needs more than a 57mm drop. They look good when fitted and work well but as other reviewers have said they have improved stopping power if you upgrade the pads. I have had no issues with them in use and will use them again when a build requires them. A nice solid product

ProsGet caliper brakes even on bikes which support 37mm tires
For over 10 year I have been riding my Surly Long Haul Trucker with the default option of cantilever brakes. I chose the Paul Component's, which are really superb (certainly with the Neo-Retro in front and the Touring in the back), but adjusting them takes time, and not really nice to do during a 100 mile ride. I switched to these Tektro R559's, and they brake as good as the canti's, and give possibly sightly more subtle control. Only disk-brakes would have been better, but that would have required a new frame.

ProsVery easy to fit and compatible with my original Weinmann brake levers
After trying (without much success) various replacement brake blocks on the original Weinmann sidepull brakes to improve the braking on my much-loved mid-80s road bike (originally fitted with 27 1/4 wheels, now 700c) I fitted these Tektro calipers. They've transformed the braking - much more stopping power and I'm chuffed with the upgrade. Highly recommended!

ConsCheap Pads, a bit flexy.
ProsReally Long, quite adjustable, quick-release.
The calipers are flexy under heavy load but that is to be expected with such a long caliper. This can easily be compensated for by keep a reasonably tight clearance. I did find changing the pads to Swisstop very beneficial.

The quick release is useful but a little harder to use than than others I have.

All round excellent value for a product of this quality.

I bought these brakes to replace the original Weinmann 730s on my 1960 Elswick Hopper Whirlwind, which were impossible to centralise and were not inspiring confidence in braking. The Tektros appear well made, they look good, they were a direct swap and were easy to set up. The improvement in braking performance is huge. I can lock both wheels if I try. Thoroughly recommended.

Consbrake pads not that great?
Prosmounts on vintage bikes, great reach for older frames, easy installation and great performance
I got these for a vintage road bike after learning the hard way about brake reach... These would easily install on my old frame with the nut mount and could reach the rim which is a bit further away in these older frames. I have yet to fine tune the brakes but as is they are already a huge improvement to my old brakes. Will have to try out whether better brakes pads (as some have indicated) give even better performance.

Prosquality and performance
I needed brakes with a long reach to convert my 1979 Dawes "Lightning" to use 700c wheels. These were the perfect choice, smart design, well made and good finish. Contrary to what I was told, these do have a centering screw adjuster which takes a small Allen key. These brakes are very effective and are far superior to the old Weinmann 730 brakes they replaced. The shoes also have a fine screw adjuster whereby they can be angled. Good value for money.

ProsBuild quality and efficiency.
Like most of your reviewers I was fixing up a good old steel frame. Mine was from the very late 50's when all was 27". I wasn't expecting much from a cheapish set of brakes with arms longer than normal. They are superb. Solidly built arms give great power with no elasticity and of course with bolt on they're just right for this sort of frame. I've still got Weinmann 730s. How did we ever stop with those???

Consbrake block covers for the silver versions are black contrary to what the picture shows
ProsExcellent quality and finish
Like some of the other reviewers I'm rebuiling and old 60's racer and need extra long reach due to new 700c wheels. The fact that the fitting isn't countersunk also means that they are just the job. Only gripe is that I chose the silver versions and the brake pads don't have silver covers like in the picture. they are black and came in plastic resealable bags rather than the manufacturers cardboard packaging. I presume this is why they are cheaper through SJS than other outlets. So i'll end up spending the money I saved on buying the brake blocks with the silver covers, shame.

Prosquality, design, QR
I had to buy these brakes because I am rebuilding my old Cinelli racer and an extra deep drop was needed for the calipers to reach the 700c rims. I wondered if the brakes would be poor quality considering that I was paying about the same as would be the price of very secondhand offerings. I was very releaved when the brakes arrived, the quality and fit seem excellent. I'm still building the bike so I can't comment on functionality and use.

For a long time I was searching for such brakes: long reach, oldschool mounting and high brake power. I bought the silver ones and mounted them on a 1980s road bike (I rebuilt up completely) with a classic and kind of 'difficult' steel frame. The brakes work very well, have been easy to mount and adjust. I also mounted SKS Chromoplastic Fenders which is no problem with these brakes.
I just love my new brakes, they are both more powerful and beautiful than the old Weinmann mid pull brakes.

This very long reach calipers are excellent for upgrading an steel frame that has only 6mm fork crown/seat stay drilling. Had no problems with mounting the nutted version and fitting the fenders and adjusting the brakes. Gives a clean look, although they are very long.
Breaking is pretty good as well.

Brompton Question
By
25 Jul 2020
Hi can this be used on a Brompton with its mudguards? Ps don’t worry about the wiring I’ll take care of that.
Its possible, the pad drop is Drop 54-68mm on OE calipers, these are 55-73mm so that should be fine, you may need to tweak the moon washers etc and obviously the cabling will be opposite.

Thanks - 28/07/20
What equivalent product would you recommend for tyres over 35mm in width?

I have a frame fitted with recessed tektro r315 callipers which are too short (to accommodate mudguards) - could I remove the bolts from the R315's and use them to fit the R559's to the frame?
Hi,

The bolts in both the R315 and R559 brakes are removable and interchangeable so in theory this is possible, but it is not something we have tested as a means to accommodate mudguards so unfortunately we do not know how well this would work.
