Rear Wheel Build
07 Jan 2017
Already asked some questions about this bike but still await answer. I am quite interested , but I notice the Rol has been built with all the spoke heads to the outside of the hub, which to my mind puts a bending moment at the pulling spoke heads. I have built all my own wheels for over the 40 years I have been cycling, I am in Aircraft Engineering. I am not criticising this, there may be valid reasons, but this is something I have never seen. I look forward to your reply.
Historically we USED to build all our “normal” wheels x2 and laced with the cross on the left side not going over the threaded boss of the cover plate (as per Rohloff’s stipulation @ that time), later, we changed to the cross going over the boss as we determined (and agreed with Rohloff) that this was better for the hub flange.
On our 26 in bikes the spoke holes in the rim are “directed” IE they face the right way so that the spoke doesn’t bend as it enters the nipple so the laced x2 pattern is used.
On our 700c bikes, that have lighter, eyeletted rims if we built x2 the spoke angle entering the nipple would mean that the spoke bent at this point, given that the spoke is threaded here (which would be a stress riser) there’s a good chance of spoke failure, hence the need to x1
HOWEVER the cross then comes too near the hub flange to be laced as the deflection at the cross would be too great so the spokes are fitted in the flange from the same side. Going in (as opposed to out) is selected for 2 reasons, the angle at the rim is reduced slightly and there is no bending force applied to the hub flange.
