Replace Drivetrain
By

Hello
I have a Bike Friday with a Sachs 3 by 7 rear hub. The cassette, chain and derialleur need replacing. But as I am sure you are aware it's hard to get good quality 7 speed equipment nowadays (the bike is 15 years old). What would you recommend as the best quality i can buy cassette, chain, derailleur. The cassette is 11 28, and the derailleur is short cage. I use friction bar end shifters. Can I use an 8 or 9 speed derailleur?
Regards
David
SJS Customer Service:
Hi,

For 7spd chains Sram and KMC offer some very good quality kit, the only cassettes I'd recommend would be the Shimano ones. You would be able to use an 8spd derailleur as they are indexed the same as a 7spd derailleur would be.

Thanks.

Hi,
I'm not very up to date with SIS gears. Will an 8 speed derailleur such as this one (Shimano Claris RD2400 8 Speed Rear Derailleur ) work with a 7 speed block and lever?
Many thanks,
Tim

Hi,

You should be fine to use it with 7spd parts, it will just require some extra work in the set up and you may need to adjust the limit screws.

Thanks.
