Details
Ultra hard wearing Carbide Super Sonic brake surface, allowing fantastic braking and wear characteristics. The carbide is projected at seven times the speed of sound on to the rim imbedding it into the alloy. Unlike a ceramic surface it cannot flake away as it is part of the rim (not a layer). Rim overall width of 24mm & inner well width 19mm.

The only recommended brake blocks are Swissstop C.S.S. Blue V brake blocks (SJSC part # 32142).

Rigida Andrea 30 26 inch CSS 36 holes

I recommend this product
ConsVery few brake pads suitable, experience needed in very wet breaking downhill
ProsDurability and braking power is far Superior too any other rim brake setup
Bought a pair in 2013, built wheels myself. And done 53.000km so far. I have travelled across Alaska and Canada, many times around New Zealand and done a 18.500km expedition around Australia. Rims have a minimal wear. Breaking surface became smooth though.
The only downside is breaking in pouring rain. In this condition you need to be very aware when going downhill with a heavy load. Solution is either control and maintain lower speed and/or when descending steep, hold you brake leaver to just touch the rims to avoid too much accumulated water between rim and brake pads. That way bicycle could be stopped much faster. In average conditions using right brake pads, stopping power is still superior to any other rim brake combination out there. I have only replaced one set of brake pads so far! Both sets being Swiss stop blue. If it wasn't for wet braking average performance it would be easy the best rim brake rim ever engineered.
Best Rims For Durability And Strength

I recommend this product
ConsCan be slow to brake in the wet
ProsVERY tough, long rim lifespan
Verifiably the toughest rim I have ever used. Not had to touch the spokes for truing after 6 years. Now up to 30,000kms and the CSS surface is pretty burnished. Still brakes very well, just a bit trcky (slow to grip at first) in wet weather with lots of water about AND cold conditions. For all other situations the braking is top class. I fully expect to get 50-60,000kms of lifespan from these.

I recommend this product
ConsA little bit of overkill on a commuting bike
ProsQuality, Reported durability
Excellent braking with the Blue Swisstop brake blocks but not yet experienced wet weather to test thoroughly. Not noticed much braking noise so far. This wheel rim is solid and I am looking forward to many miles on it. I upgraded from the standard Rigida Andra 30 (which is still going strong!) based on many on line recommendations.

I’ve been running one on the front for 18000 miles with little sign of wear. Good dry weather braking with Swisstop C.S.S blocks, very poor in the wet .

Are you planning to have these back in stock?

If not is there a CSS equivalent?
Sadly CSS is pretty much discontinued- so any alternative would not have the CSS coating. The normal Andra 30 is a good option.

Thanks,

Can these be used with disc brake?
By
27 Aug 2019
I am looking for mtb rims that can be used with a disc brake system or with both styles? if these rims are not what I need which rims would you suggest I use. My XC riding will be mild. I am using this more for urban riding and some light XC trails.
There would be nothing stopping you using this with disc brakes.

are you going to have 36h of Andra 30 with CSS coating in stock?

IDS version
By
01 Dec 2017
I recently became the proud owner of a used Thorn Nomad. It is equipped with Rigida Andra 30 IDS rims. Are these different to the CSS version?
I'm concerned that I may be used the wrong type of brake blocks. What type would you recommend with these rims?
Thank you very much for you help :-)
Hi,

The CSS version have a grey braking surface, they MUST use SJS part # 32142.
Be aware, if you have been using the wrong pads this surface may have worn off.

Thanks.
