ConsHeavier Tubes Needed for Loaded Bike
ProsGreat Price + Great Features
I started out with 2" Extremes and then tried the 2.25" version on a 1985 mtn bike that I've converted for bikepacking. Since it doesn't have front suspension, a fat tire takes the job on instead. Originally, my bike had spec 2.125" tires on it and since the Extremes are sized small, the 2.25" fit perfect front and back. The only real bugaboo with the larger Ex's is their ability to roll on the rim during cornering with heavy loads (as noted in Thorn Bike's 2011 catalog). The solution suggested was to slap in a heavier downhill inner tube and Thorn specifically named the Schwalbe AV13D Schrader valve as the only game in town. Actually, it isn't: the Panaracer DH Super Tube has a Presta valve and at 130 gr heavier (420 gr!) is even better for lower pressure cornering with no pinch flats. For loaded touring on rough back roads and tracks, that tough and springy combo of 2.25" Extremes and Panaracer Super Tubes might fill the bill.

ConsNot on these beauties
ProsLandrover big and chunky
What ta say....these are pretty amazing tyres at an obsurd price. Robin you grey headed fox, how do you manage to knock 'em off for £20 I'll never know..? Yes, they are made in Thailand, but that's no problem. They are grippy and sing in harmony with my Hope hubs. The 2.2 inch size makes my bike look like a real beast. A go anywhere LandRover for sure. I've set them up tubeless on Flow rims with Rim Strips and they are fine.

ProsRolling resistance, grip, puncture resistant
I moved to these for my trekking bike (Thorn Sterling) to replace Schwalbe Hurricanes, as a compromise for Lhasa to Kathmandu, to copy with dirt, washboard, tarmac and rough tarmac.
I was not disappointed!
I am amazed at the comfort, and rolling resistance, and was easily the quickest of a group of 16 on downhills Big grin. I've changed permanently..

ConsLight noise
ProsRoll well lots of grip no fear of punctures
Suprised that they roll quite easy on the tarmac but there is a slight road buzz which is slighly frustrating as my raven tour is normally silent to ride, but I need something to grip off road as riding the Heaphy trail and then on down the west coast I needed a tyre to do it all and these seem to fit nicely, and at the current price they are a steel

ConsNo cons.
ProsEverything about this tyre
I purchased one Extreme tyre to replace a Schwalbe MTB tyre on the front which I found to be wanting to take it's own track.
What an amazing tyre!
The rolling resistance is low on tarmac and it's road holding is superb in all conditions, On a woodland dirt track which was rather wet it just pumped the water out of the side of the tread and a quick slow down was needed to avoid dousing a walker in muddy water!
The tyre gives you confidence that it will make the bike do what you ask of it.
I just replaced the rear tyre with an Extreme as well and the ride is much more comfortable.
I was a little unsure of the puncture proof level of this tyre so I added Schwalbe blue dot to the tubes and after first putting an Extreme tyre on the bike some 4 months ago have not suffered a puncture after riding 7 days a week and covering roads, lanes, cycle paths grassland and woodland paths.

ConsInconsistent bead tension,questionable puncture resistance.
ProsRolling speed, compound durability.
I bought these tires for an adventure touring bike. When I fitted them
Both one was ridiculously tight,I tried it on both rims to make sure it wasn't a wheel problem it wasn't. Bearing in mind that punctures rarely
Seem to happen on nice days I dread changing this in the rain.
This said, I have used them on fire road, normal road and in very
Wet conditions on both: they roll fast, corner and hold well, on all
Surfaces. In fact I thought I had cracked the eternal "prefect" tyre question and then the stupidest tiny staple punctured me. Probably just one of those perverse quirks of luck, but I would consider the marathon tour plus next time with the higher level of protection.

What Inner Tubes Would You Recommend For These?
By
04 Dec 2014
SJS Customer Service:
Hi,

The inner tubes we recommend can be found in the related products section below the picture/description on the product page. These would be from Schwalbe's 13 series, with the AV13 coming with Schrader valves and the SV13 coming with the high pressure Presta valves.

Thanks.
