I recommend this product
ProsIt goes round
and round and round and round.......
except when a steep hill comes along then it slows down.

Have had same wheel on my Dawes for last 20 years, no problems until got side swiped by a car which buckled the wheel beyond repair. So no reason to doubt this like-for-like replacement can't keep going for longer.

I recommend this product
Consnone , just check it now & then , look after your wheel & they look after you !!
ProsA sensible light & strong , & reliable touring or commutting wheel
For touring a good reliable wheel is a must , it needs to be strong & it needs to be light . This wheel from SJS cycles is perfect for the job . I try to limit the weight in my panniers , but its not possible to plan touring on roads without potholes , so without going for overkill in strength this wheel is ideal .I have ridden from the Sahara to North Cape Norway with out any problems to my Mavic front wheel , BUT baggage handlers got the better of my previous rear wheel . A strong bike box would cure that ,A sensible but they do not make a lightweight folding model that you take with you !!!!

can you use this with 700c x 25mm tyres?
16 Jul 2019
If not, could you recommend a suitable rear wheel for medium weight touring (15kg weight in rear panniers)? Many thanks
Could FIT a 25mm tyre but - Recommended Tyre Widths: 28 to 47 mm, best to phone 01278441500 for advice. RT

Can the wheel be built with black spokes instead of the silver ones?
Yes, but would be a custom built wheel, rather than custom pre built for the website - Simply add the hub/rim/spoke-build option to your basket!

Can you build this rim on a Shomano XT hub - or use my old XT hub to put on a new rim? Thanks
06 Apr 2019
Yes, send us your hub with a good covering letter including;

ALL of your contact / delivery details.
What you would like us to do with the hub.

Addressed to Shop Sales.
Alternatively, simply check out with an XT hub, Mavic rim and a wheel build option.

Would this be suitable as a tandem rear wheel? Not for touring, just riding.

We could not recommend any wheel without knowing things such as the rider weight etc.

Will this wheel be ok on my 7 speed?
04 May 2018
Hi, my bike currently has a 7 speed rear wheel , 135 OLN and friction shifters. I'm thinking of buying this wheel and an 8 speed cassette, would that work ok?
Hi there,

Yes this will work no problem.

Which cassettes/how many kilos loaded/how width tyre?
07 Apr 2018
1- which shimano 10 speed cassettes are compatible?
2 - how many kilos can loading?
3 - is this nice wheel width enough for 38" and above tyres?
Hi there,

Any of the Shimano 10spd cassettes will be suitable.
This is not listed from the rim manufacturer, we would offer the recommendation of 110kgs. The rim used is designed for all road/gravel not strictly touring. If you wanted a stronger wheel we would recommend the Ryde Sputnik or Andra (the best).
Yes you could use up to 55mm tyres.

Suitable replacement for use on Dawes horizon 2011?
22 Mar 2018
Hi there,

We do not stock or have that particular bike to hand, but from what I can find online this should be suitable.

Will This Wheel Accept A 10Spd Cassette?

What'S The Width Of The Rim - In Millimeters?
29 Jun 2016

This wheel has the Mavic A719 rim which has an internal width of 19mm.

Which Deore Hub?
08 Dec 2015
I assume this is the basic Deore hub. Could I pay the extra to have it built with a Deore XT hub?

The hub in this wheel is the newer Deore FH-T610 hub. We can definitely build you up a wheel with an A719 rim and a Deore XT hub. We would have to do this as a custom wheel build though. For more information on custom wheel build costs and current lead time please email

Is This Wheel Compatible With 9 Speed Ultegra Cassette
04 Oct 2015

This wheel would indeed be compatible with a 9spd Ultegra cassette.
