The CC-4 is a drop-in style gauge that measures bicycle chain wear. The laser cut CC-4 accurately measures a long section of chain and stategically comes in contact with the chain in three places, quickly and easily taking the guesswork out of knowing when chain replacement is necessary. A worn chain will cause poor shifting as well as accelerate drivetrain wear. The tool works on any 5 to 12-speed derailleur chain (including SRAM AXS) and is designed to accurately indicate when a chain reaches .5% and .75% wear, the points at which most chain manufacturers suggest replacement.

Chain checkers

I have an old Park Tool CC-3 ( not CC-3.2) and an even older Cyclus tool dating from when we all had x5 speed gears. I go back to when a Benelux or Simplex x4 speed was a novelty. However, I have upgraded my wife and myself up to x 9 & x10 spd over the years and am thinking x11. Do I need different chain checkers for different speed chains??? My Cyclus drops straight through any chain x8 spd plus, and, the Park Tool, both ends stays outside indicating OK even on chains I know have done 3-4000 heavy duty miles.
Also, i am now thoroughly confused as to where to measure. I always put the checkers on the chain above the stays where I could keep it taught but now reading comments all over the cycling internet I see people advocating the lower position beneath the stays. And yet... I see publicity photos of the Park CC-4 placed above the stays. Help! Any advice.
Some chain checkers will be specific, but most cover a decent range, this is 5-12 speed.

Unless specifically stated, chain checkers can be used above or below the chainstay; makes no difference.
