My pashley sovereign. Now has working gears. I Read the previous reviews and the penny dropped. This was what my temperamental inconsistent original pashley gears needed. Now cycling to work I no longer crunch in and out of gear, they all finally work.

This replaced the old plastic 5speed SA shifter on my Brompton which fell apart. It was easy to fit and comes with a new cable to work the 1991 Sturmey Archer 5-star hub gear on my Brompton. It works fine and feels a real upgrade to the old plastic shifter. Delivered quickly within a couple of days from SJC. Thanks.

This all metal design is the Sturmey Archer replacement for the original cost saving frustration multiplying fundamentally flawed and appalling badly thought out all plastic design and it has transformed gear changes on our Pashley Princess from hit or miss mostly miss to a secure positive gear change and for the first time it is now possible to select bottom gear and reliably stay there, how it should have been in the first place on a six hundred pound plus bicycle.

This is the third thumb shifter I have fitted and I now consider the wear on the lever indexing is the main cause of all my 5speed hub problems. The second thumb shifter was no longer indexing properly after 14 months and 5000 miles but at a replacement cost of £15.99 including the cable working out at £1 a month I am very satisfied.

ProsPositive gear change. Well made handlebar fitting.

I bought a 2nd hand bike with this lever broken and so had to replace it. I was rather sceptical as to whether a change of design from the original Sturmey Archer would be as good but in fact this works well enough. When you change gear you know what will happen next. I cannot comment on the long term reliability but it looks like the cable will not break as often as the old design.

A well made shifter, only problem is the diameter of the bar clamp. I had to spread and use a longer bolt to fit bull bars.

What size of outer shimano gear cable do I need for the inner gear cable supplied with the shifter please? Is it 4 or 5mm?

this shifter has a clamp diameter of 22.2mm so as long as your seatpost is no larger than that then in theory you could mount this to your seatpost. This shifter is indeed suitable for use with the S-RC5(W) hub.
