ProsWork well with my carbide rims
I love my Thorn Sherpa touring bike built for me by Thorn, the carbide rims with these pads are super efficient, you just have to be careful in applying the brakes, they have lasted well - no complaints

I've found over the years that these pads are the best for use on the six wheels I have.
Weak and juddery in wet but super long life

ConsWet braking
ProsLongevity
New ceramic rims can be very rough for the first few hundred miles and a set of Kool-Stop ceramic pads lasted all of 30 miles before being ground to dust against my DT rims. I fitted some of these Swissstop ones, which lasted about five years and weren't completely worn out by the end of that time. They do judder in the wet though, and braking is quite weak - worse than a normal rubber shoe on a plain alloy rim. Dry braking is good.

Oh these are just heaven with Ryde CSS rims. They were easy to install and really grab hold of the rim to stop me. I did have to install with quite a bit of toe-in to eliminate squealing. In heavy emergency braking they do screech a little bit - but it's probably a good thing in this case as it provides an extra warning. Brilliant in dry weather. Not as good in wet weather, but far superior to anything else I've used.

Last For Ever, Great Dry Performance But....

Consinitial wet weather limited braking
Proslong lasting, blue
Now 2 to 4 times the price of Shimano ceramic pads, which have better wet weather performance. The Swiss stop product are scary, when it rains after a long dry spell, giving virtually no braking for a short time until the rims clear. But do last for years using daily. Just be careful when it rains. This does not happen with the Shimano ones.

ConsA little more expensive
ProsTough
Some report noisy brakes with these but so far I have had no problem with these. Some noise but seems to be getting better quickly. It is not annoying though. They fit my 2009 Deore V brake shoes. Huge improvement in dry braking on a CSS rim compared to the Koolstop dual compound pads on a standard Rigida Andra 30.

Avid Shorty Ultimate Shorty compatability
By
16 Jan 2021
Hi, I use Avid Ultimate Shorty cantilevers which seem to only accept a road type pad (and not a V brake pad)
Are there road pad equivalents of this pad or is there an alternative V brake type holder that will fit the Ultimate Shortys and take these pads please?
Thank you for your enquiry, these are only for CSS rims.

are these compatible with carbon rims. If not what can i use to fit my s70c cantilever brakeset
By

NO, these are not compatible with carbon fiber rims. We do not have a recommendation for an alternative which are safe to use on carbon rims

Have the pins changed recently?
By
07 Sep 2018
I fitted a set 3 years ago and the pins sank right down.
The set I have now - the pins don't go all the way down.
The top 'loop' sits about 3mm proud of the pad. I am concerned that the pin will drop out. A friend said that the pin is a 'collapsable' type. Not sure what this means. If pins do come out is there a danger of the pad coming loose?
The pin should push all the way in with just a small section acting as a hook out of the top. Ensure the pin has correctly come out of the lower hole and that it is orientated correctly.

Thanks
Are these still in production? Is it necessary to stock up?

Hi there,

We have no reason to suggest you would need to stock up on these.

Thanks
Are these the correct replacement for pads listed as part 13032 in my original Thorn invoice?
By

Hi there,

These are the correct pads for CSS rims.

Thanks
How do you tell when these blocks are worn to their limit?

Can you leave replacement until the little surface notches disappear completely?
Hi there,

Yes, as the notches disappear, its time to replace.

Thanks
How long will they last in the packet
By
02 Oct 2017
I bought these as spares in 2010. I am no way close to wearing out the set that came with my Thorn Raven. How long will the spare set last before they become too old to use?
I think they'd have shelf life of decades.
Block Shoe

Will these blocks fit into Ashima 72m Cantilever Brake Block shoes?
Hi,

These Swissstop Blue blocks should fit fine into your 72mm Ashima cantilever brake block shoes.

Thanks.
How Many?
By

Does one get the four shown or just two?
Hi,

These brake blocks come as a pack of 4 as shown in the picture.

Thanks.
Where Is The Holder For These Blocks?
By
02 Feb 2015
I need just the holder.
Hi,

These blocks are designed as replacement blocks for any Shimano style V-brake holder. The holders are not available without pads I'm afraid so if you wanted to use these blocks you would have to buy a full set of pads and remove the inserts from them.

Thanks.
Do These Fit The Same As Shimano S70C Brake Pads?
By
01 Dec 2014
Hi,

Yes, these brake blocks will fit into the brake shoes the same as standard Shimano V-brake blocks like the S70C blocks.

Thanks.
Cantilever Compatibility
By
20 Jun 2014
Can these be used with cantilever brakes? I assume so, as they're the recommended pads for Rigida Grizzly CSS 700C rims, and I haven't seen many 700C tourers using v brakes compared with cantilevers.
Hi,

As they are only the inserts you'll need to fit them to a cantilever compatible backing then they will work fine with cantilever brakes. V-brakes are less common on 700c wheels but the CSS sidewall is more popular on their 26" Andra rims.

Thanks.
