Great Brakes For Older Road Bikes

Consbrake pads not that great?
Prosmounts on vintage bikes, great reach for older frames, easy installation and great performance
I got these for a vintage road bike after learning the hard way about brake reach... These would easily install on my old frame with the nut mount and could reach the rim which is a bit further away in these older frames. I have yet to fine tune the brakes but as is they are already a huge improvement to my old brakes. Will have to try out whether better brakes pads (as some have indicated) give even better performance.

Best Brakes For Upgrading To 700C Wheels

Prosquality and performance
I needed brakes with a long reach to convert my 1979 Dawes "Lightning" to use 700c wheels. These were the perfect choice, smart design, well made and good finish. Contrary to what I was told, these do have a centering screw adjuster which takes a small Allen key. These brakes are very effective and are far superior to the old Weinmann 730 brakes they replaced. The shoes also have a fine screw adjuster whereby they can be angled. Good value for money.

ProsDoes what its supposed to fo, stop you real quick.
Right, i'm training up for my 4th PBP (ParisBrestParis) and I've used old school Mafac's with Koolstop til now have bought a pair of these when the first hit the shores in the States (refitted with Koolstop). These get the job done, and just to offend the sensiblilities of "hear snobs", these are on my RENE HERSE. It isn't how it looks, its how good its works.

Good quality brakes, were nearly the only one I could find with that reach, so I was a bit suspicious, but they are very good for the price.
Too Much Flex

Have I got a duff pair? No one else has mentioned the huge amount of flex under braking, making very spongy brakes. Also the cable clamp has to crush the cable before it grips. I've put these on a "re

ProsBuild quality and efficiency.
Like most of your reviewers I was fixing up a good old steel frame. Mine was from the very late 50's when all was 27". I wasn't expecting much from a cheapish set of brakes with arms longer than normal. They are superb. Solidly built arms give great power with no elasticity and of course with bolt on they're just right for this sort of frame. I've still got Weinmann 730s. How did we ever stop with those???

Consbrake block covers for the silver versions are black contrary to what the picture shows
ProsExcellent quality and finish
Like some of the other reviewers I'm rebuiling and old 60's racer and need extra long reach due to new 700c wheels. The fact that the fitting isn't countersunk also means that they are just the job. Only gripe is that I chose the silver versions and the brake pads don't have silver covers like in the picture. they are black and came in plastic resealable bags rather than the manufacturers cardboard packaging. I presume this is why they are cheaper through SJS than other outlets. So i'll end up spending the money I saved on buying the brake blocks with the silver covers, shame.

Prosquality, design, QR
I had to buy these brakes because I am rebuilding my old Cinelli racer and an extra deep drop was needed for the calipers to reach the 700c rims. I wondered if the brakes would be poor quality considering that I was paying about the same as would be the price of very secondhand offerings. I was very releaved when the brakes arrived, the quality and fit seem excellent. I'm still building the bike so I can't comment on functionality and use.

For a long time I was searching for such brakes: long reach, oldschool mounting and high brake power. I bought the silver ones and mounted them on a 1980s road bike (I rebuilt up completely) with a classic and kind of 'difficult' steel frame. The brakes work very well, have been easy to mount and adjust. I also mounted SKS Chromoplastic Fenders which is no problem with these brakes.
I just love my new brakes, they are both more powerful and beautiful than the old Weinmann mid pull brakes.
Fair price here on SJS Cycles and fast delivery to Germany. Thanks!

I bought these brakes for my old Raleigh Medale that I was making into a fixed gear. They are great and with the nut fixing are a perfect replacement. Awesome.

ConsBlocks and pads need upgrade
ProsIdeal to upgrade to 700c wheels
These brakes proved ideal for a restoration of a Racing Cycle originally with 27 x 1 1/4 steel wheels. Replaced with Mavic 700c and a set of these brakes with Shimano blocks and Swissstop pads. Performance is now excellent.

Cons'click-switch' kind of break release feels a bit cheap...
Prosbrake shoes, mudguard clearance
This very long reach calipers are excellent for upgrading an steel frame that has only 6mm fork crown/seat stay drilling. Had no problems with mounting the nutted version and fitting the fenders and adjusting the brakes. Gives a clean look, although they are very long.
Breaking is pretty good as well.

These breaks are not the cheapest, but worth their money.

Prosgreat looking and quality brakes.
A nice looking caliper set that went on within 1/2 an hour of me receiving them. Easy fit and set up adding a degree of class to my old bike. Just waiting for a little extra money to get some 700c wheels which is why I went for these brakes, to fit 700c wheels to a frame designed for 27".

Nutted, Not Recessed
By
15 Feb 2016
Hi there,

I'm very much interested in using this system on an old frame from the 80's.

I saw on Tektro's website that they have this model available in Recessed and nutted version. I just wanted confirmation before ordering that this is indeed the nutted version that is compatible with older frames.

Thanks and best regards.
SJS Customer Service:
Hi,

I can indeed confirm that these are the nutted version of the brakes suitable for use on older frames.

Thanks.

By

Hello, just wondered if these would fit a Brompton?
SJS Customer Service:
Hi, This is something we have no experience of fitting. Note the cable feed on a Brompton is from underneath the calliper. We wold not recommend these brakes for this use.

Cyclocross Tyre
By
14 Mar 2014
I am planning to put them on a road bike and fit to some 700X32 cyclocross tyre. Would it work?

Thank you
SJS Customer Service:
Hi,

These brakes have good clearance for calliper brakes so you should be fine fitting 32mm tyres into them.

Thanks.
