MiniMODs Rear Shock - Black Cover - Light Load - Black Spring

I weigh 70kg and found the standard Brompton block too hard for rough roads, even with the rear tyre (Marathon) at 50psi.

Bought the 'Light Load' Minimods spring, hoping for a softer ride. Using one of the two (identical-seeming) included elastomer inserts gave a harder ride than with the old block, but drilling out some material from the centre of the insert, and shortening it a little, has resulted in much smoother springing that takes out the worst of the vibration from cobbles, while being well damped. The insert also acts as a bump stop. Tyre is at 60psi.

It might be that the Mid Load spring with no insert would give similar smoothing - though with no damping or bump stop. Something to try if the butchered insert doesn't last.

Very happy with this set-up - it is definitely smoother to ride than the original.

I knocked one star off 'Ease of Use' because the elastomer as supplied makes this firmer than the Brompton original block, despite it being for lighter users than me.

Was having trouble with uneven roads and lack of shock absorption on my electric Brompton leading to a sore rear end! After much research and excellent help from SJS Cycles customer services I was advised to change the rear shock that came on my Brompton as it was too firm for my light weight. What a difference that made.

Alongside this I reduced my tyre pressure to 70 psi and invested in a Brooks B17S saddle. Problem solved and now I can ride in comfort without padded cycle shorts/leggings and remain painfree!
