To keep the price of our racks as low as possible, we accept seconds from our rack shop, this minimises the number of rejects being scrapped in the manufacturing process. The rack you will receive will have either some small section of missing weld, a blow hole, defective paint or a smaill piece of weld trapped in one of the tubes that will rattle. These issues won't affect the racks structural integrity and we still guarantee them in the normal way.
Here's the tech info from the regular rack listing:
Cycling Plus Recommended - Best Rear Rack For Expeditions.
The strongest rear rack on the market, the ultimate !
Perfect for adventure touring, cycle camping, carrying the shopping, whatever you need to do.
We believe that our Thorn carriers are the strongest carriers on the market. They are not particularly heavy and they are very reliable…they have been used in extreme conditions, with massive weights and nobody has broken one yet!
Our carriers are also very functional. Unlike other products, our rear carrier’s 5 cross members allow precise and non-slip positioning of your panniers. We provide a mount for your rear light.
Our carriers are made from 10mm seamless, cold drawn, heat treated, aerospace Cr-Mo steel. It is difficult to cold draw such small diameter tubing consequently; a dead straight tube is a rare beast. We have our tubes heat treated; this makes a significant difference to the UTS (Ultimate Tensile Strength) of the tube but heat treating such small diameter tubes, dramatically decreases the chances of making a dead straight tube. It is fair to assume that the tubes used in our carriers won’t be straight and that they will need some tweaking to fit the bosses. Our mechanics are used to this and you need not worry, if you buy your Thorn bike with the carriers fitted. If you buy carriers separately, you will need to be prepared to do this tweaking yourself.
We’d love to make beautiful, straight, strong, reliable, lightweight, functional carriers but we can’t.
But we are happy and proud to be able to supply strong, reliable, functional, affordable carriers at a sensible weight.
Dimensions - 380mm long x 130mm wide.
Weight - 860g
Height 350mm from lower mounting bolt to rack top.
5 tubes for the load surface!
Max load when used on surfaced roads:- When fitted with 6mm screws = 60Kg…when fitted with 5mm screws = 40kg. These figures should be halved when being used on South American Ripio.

I recommend this product
ConsNone.
ProsStrength/light weight.
Don't let the one one-star review put you off. This is a superb, simple and elegant rack. I've carried 30kg over very rough and rocky dirt track for miles with the bike bouncing all over the place and it is rock steady. Tubus racks are strong, but this is clearly stronger for more or less the same weight. The steel is heat treated.

Thorn Expedition Rack. How Much Does It Weigh?
By

Does the thorn fit any standard touring frame? I also wonder what the difference is between Blackburn expedition 1 and the 1+ as tho' you give a weight difference I can see nothing else. The criteria for me are a) rigidity b) a good width top for a tent or whatever and c) no secondary panier hook bars impeding the use of the standard top bars. Thanks.
Hi, the weight of the Thorn rack is 860g. The difference in the two Blackburn racks is down to the finish & top plate tube diameter, the EX1 is the newer model, is matt Black & has a tube diameter where you would hang panniers of 9mm. The EX1+ has a gloss Black finish & has a tube diameter of 8mm. Regards
