I recommend this product
ConsNot as easy to use as old trigger shifter and requires cable threading before outer fitted.
ProsElegant, simple, modern design.
A handsome modern shifter that works well with Sachs 3 speeds too. Certainly looks better than the old trigger shifter on touring or re-purposed ATB bikes but I still prefer the easy flick of the old shifter which can also be disconnected without completely removing the cable.

Consa bit heavier than my old shifter
Proswell made, positive engagement, attractive design
I purchased this Sturmey-Archer 3-speed thumbshifter to replace an old Torpedo shifter on a Brompton folding bike. The new shifter looks great and has a very solid positive feel when changing gears. It is a definite improvement over the flimsy Torpedo system.

ConsA bit of extra work required to go into the fast gear while riding the bike.
ProsMetal (as opposite to plastic), feels sturdy
I have bought this to replace the flimsy plastic shifter on my 3-speed Brompton (M3R).

Works perfectly, still not 100% sure on the best wire housing cable I need to use (SA one or Brompton default one).

As always, fast shipping and pro packaging from SJS Cycles.

I hope I'll find the bodge solution for it.
Good Service, Nice Product

ConsA bit stiff
ProsNice looking, easy to fit, solid.
The shifter arrived before all the other handlebar stuff (grips, brake levers and handlebars) I'd ordered from other places, so full marks there.

The lever is a bit stiff. I'd envisioned being able to position it so that I could flick it both directions with my thumb, but it really needs to be positioned on top of the bars, and you have to use your index finger to shift up. Not really a problem in the end.

On my first couple of rides it made an infuriating "ding" whenever I went over the slightest of bumps. This mysteriously went away as soon as I'd narrowed the sound down to the shifter (by muffling it with my hand as I went over a speed bump), and hasn't returned.

Overall, I'm quite happy with it.

ConsNew grips required
ProsWorks well, looks good,easily fitted
Great gear changer much better than the standard plastic one supplied. Note that you have to remove handle bar grips to fit easily. This means if you have standard Brompton ones then they are glued so you need buy new ones.
Bolt On Replacement For Brompton 3-Speed
By Nic Brown

5 / 5
I recommend this product
ConsNo split clamp for installation
ProsSolid, light, uses standard cables
This is an excellent replacement for the all plastic Brompton 3speed shifter (what is it with British industrial design and injection moulded plastics?). It fits snugly next to, and matches the looks of the S type levers. Better ergonomics and more positive shift than the stock Brompton shifter.

Best of all, it takes standard road/MTB shifter cables, so sourcing replacements is easier, especially outside the UK. Cable replacement is easier too. I wouldn't worry that the included cable is uncoated. The Brompton shifter cable is a straight run compared to the twisty brake cable housings, and uses a pulley where it has to make the tightest bend. Shifting is crisp and precise. Highly recommended.
Just The Right Shifter For My Pashley Guvnor

I recommend this product
ConsSlightly long shifting strokes between gears
ProsLooks, quality, reliable
I am the proud owner of a Pashley Guvnor but didn't like the 1980 style of the standard SA 3 speed shifter. Looks aren't everything but at this price I couldn't resist. The thumshifter is well made, was easy to fit (although the grip needs to come of: use the brake lever to help pushing the grip of the bar). and has worked well for nearly a year now. If I had to mention any disadvantage then maybe I'd say that the stroke of the shifter is a little on the long side but not problematic whatsoever, quick shifting is well possible. Changes are light and it locks reliably. Recommended!

A Three Speed Shifter For A Standard M3L Brompton
By CityJim
05 May 2011

I recommend this product
ConsIncluded cable does not seem to be coated therefore doubt it would run freely on a Brompton
ProsHigh quality component, not heavy, good positive gear change
Having read through the forums for advice on modding my Brompton cockpit i did'nt want to experiment in trying to get a shifter that would work with my M3L's standard Sturmey Archer hub gearing so I opted for this. It is not heavy but it is reassuring well built and is solid. Mounting on my new bars was easy and I was able to reuse the existing gear cable (although I had to remove it from the bike and thread it all the way through). Would I buy it again? Yes.

Is this a straight replacement for the Brompton stock shifter and can I change cable too?
By
02 Nov 2019
Want to replace my Brompton shifter - just doesn't work well. I have custom handlebars, the current cable is just barely long enough, so what cable kit can you recommend to add to my order? Basically a complete change from shifter to adjustment screw by rear wheel. Thanks so much for the advise.
Yes, and you will require a new cable. We cannot advise the cable without knowing about which stem, bars etc you have.

Thanks - 04/11/19
What diameter handlebar does this fit? Also it is a friction lever or a click change?

Does this work with Bromton wide range hub?
By
14 Jul 2017
Hi,

I have a Brompton with the Wide Range Hub. I can see this seems to work with all Surmey Archer 3 speeds. I just wanted to check that the wide range hub from Brompton has the same compatibility?

Thanks.
Hi,

The BWR hubs still use the same indexing as the standard Sturmey Archer hubs so you'll be fine to use this shifter.

Thanks.
T'Other Way Round?
By
29 Jun 2016
Can the assembly be reversed to fit on the left side, or is there a left sided part?
Hi,

This shifter cannot be reversed and there is not a left handed version of this shifter either I'm afraid. The only solution we can recommend is fitting this shifter upside down below the handlebar on the left as this will then set up the orientation correctly just upside down.

Thanks.
Sturmey Archer "Sls3H T3 (S)" Thumbshifter
By
02 Dec 2015
Hi, Are you able to supply the Sturmey Archer "SLS3H T3 (S)" Thumbshifter? This is a shimano type 3 speeds thumbshifter.
I saw this reference number on the 2014/2015 Sturmey Archer product catalogue (http://www.sunrace.cz/dokumenty/sturmeyarcher20142015.pdf)
I really need a thumbshifter for my little son's bike before Christmas. Tanks
Hi,

We stock everything that is available from Sturmey Europe and unfortunately this does not appear to be an available item. I have also checked the 2014/2015 catalogue available from SturmeyArcher.com and cannot see it listed in there. This means we are unable to help I'm afraid.

Thanks.
Does It Work With Shimano Nexus 3 Speeds?
By
01 Dec 2015
Hello,

Does this "3 Speed Sturmey Archer SLS30T " works with a Shimano nexus 3 speeds (SG3R40)?

I saw on bikesncruisers.com and on Amazon (Niagara Cycle Works) that some Sturney Archer does.

Thanks
Hi,

Its not something we have ever tested so we can't say for sure, but it is possible as Sturmey Archer and Sram 3spd hubs use the same same cable pull so it is very possible that Shimano does as well.

Thanks.

Sachs 3X7 Hub Compatibility?
By
07 Mar 2015
I have a Moulton APB Land Rover with the original Sachs 3x7 hub derailleur setup and original grip shifters. I want to change the hub grip shift for a thumb lever. Is this Sturmey compatible with the old Sachs hub?
Hi,

I'm afraid its unlikely, although we've never tested it on your particular hub as far as we're aware old Sachs hubs used a different cable pull to Sturmey Archer hubs.

Thanks.
Will This Work On A Brompton?
By
16 Dec 2014
Will this replace the standard Brompton 3 speed shifter, on a 2014 bike?
Are there any downsides?
Hi,

Yes this shifter will work on a Brompton and can be used to replace the standard 3spd shifter on a 2014 bike. There are no real downsides other than the size/shape of the shifter makes it not look so neat on the bike and depending on the position you may have to be careful when folding it.

Thanks.
Brompton 6Speed
By
21 Aug 2014
my plastic shifter on 3 speed broke. plan to use this as replacement. Do i or do you recommend changing the left side (2 speed) plastic shifter as well?

I'm also using S bar. Do i need to change any cables?
Hi,

Its completely up to your if you want to change the 2spd trigger as well, it won't actually need replacing until it breaks though. If you do want to replace it, you will have to replace it like for like though as there aren't any other compatible shifters. The Brompton 2spd shifter is SJSC part number 13655. You should not need to change your cables when switching shifters but it is recommended.

Thanks.
Hello For My Brompton 3 Speeds
By
17 Aug 2014
hello for my brompton 3 speeds whats a good choice between

3 Speed Sturmey Archer Sls3X T3 Thumbshifter

or

3 Speed Sturmey Archer SLS30T Thumbshifter HSJ962

????????????????????
Hi,

You're better off going for the SLS30T shifter as this is designed to work with most 3 spd hubs, the SLS3X is designed for a specific hub.

Thanks.
