Still value for money

ConsNeeds a slight modification
ProsIt works
Further to my Jan 2017 review, here's a progress report. You will need a cable ferrule for the shifter, else the cable will fray on the guide hole. It's SJS part 5267. But the guide hole is only 3mm, so it has to be drilled out to 4mm. This sounds like a faff, but the whole procedure plus new cable took just 15 minutes. During this modification, I carefully prised off the plastic casing (actually looks better without). This exposes the tiny spring that returns the lever. And it is this spring which will determine the life of the shifter. But I still give it 4 stars.

ConsFeels a bit flimsy, but could last forever
ProsPrice
The obvious attraction is its price against the SRAM original trigger. And the Germanic writing suggests some quality. The original on my Brompton still works fine since I bought the bike from SJS in 2002, so that's really the standard to match. For now I've fitted this copy on a cheap Dahon folder with a Sachs hub on a 16-inch wheel. And it works fine. After all, it's just a trigger on a pivot. The nipple on the SJS gear cable is a bit too large for the seating, but a junior hacksaw could slim it to fit. But would I put it on the Brompton? Hmm...

Can I use this shifter with a Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hub?

No sorry it is not compatible with that hub.
Does This Shifter Have A Hard Stop In Position 1?

My bike has a Sachs Torpedo Dreigang paired with a Sturmey Archer 3-speed trigger shifter.

When you pull the SA shifter down into first gear, you can continue to pull the trigger past the indexing point which breaks the connection between the indicator chain and gear cable anchorage near the hub. I guess this is because on SA hubs the indicator chain screws into the gear anchorage whereas on the Sachs they just sort of clip together.

Does this Dreigang shifter have a stop in first gear so that it can't be over-pulled?
Hi,

This shifter does indeed have a stop in gear one stopping you over shifting.

Thanks.
Do You Sell Replace Cables For The Sram Spectro Shifter?
By

Hi,

These shifters require the same type of cable end nipple as the old Sturmey Archer shifters so the best cable we have is a Fibrax made one which is SJSC part number 33901.

Thanks.
Will This Shifter Work With My Hub?

I have a Brompton purchased in the UK in 2003. The trigger has recently broken away from the bracket. The original shifter is labelled Torpedo (Spectro Sachs). Is this product the appropriate replacement? Is there a better option?
Hi,

This is a suitable replacement for the shifter on your Brompton. This is the only shifter of this type we have.

Thanks.
