Not suitable for Shadow RD 10 Speed

ConsDoes not have the range for Shadow RD 10 speed
ProsLooks good
Although this is a friction shift shifter. It does not have the pull capacity for modern shimano Shadow RD 10 Speed. I have tested it on an XT mech (T8000) for the last 4 months. No matter how it is tuned, it can only cover 9 out of the 10 gears. A pity as it looks nice but I’m going to have to replace it.

ConsNot available in black
ProsCost-effective and well made, simple to install, friction level is adjustable without tools
Perfect, friction only, bar end shifters. Easy to fit, easy to set up, easy to use - especially as you can trim the either mech in tiny increments because there is no indexing. Used to replace Shimano bar ends when the tiny little indexing spring broke when I swapped bars.
Neat and simple

ConsNone as yet
ProsSimple, adaptable
Used to move old tube mounted friction shifters up to my handlebars. Can be used with a range of gears as they are not indexed (I'm using them with an 8speed). Nothing complicated about installing them and used standard length cable. Seem well made and should last.

ConsGeeting them straigt on the bar is a bit fiddly.
Prosworks with any combination of gears
These were to be used on a new Time Trial bike I was putting together. As I was running Camagnolo gears with a shimano wheel and sprcokets, the friction control was ideal for shifting gears.

They come without cables, so be aware that you will need an extra long rear cable. They fitted well although a bit fiddly to get lined up. Worked well with a smooth change and given time and experience probably as good as indexing. At half the price of Campag good value.

Cable routing

Do these levers route the cables outside the handlebar (under the tape) or inside, therefore needing cable ports in the bars?
No, these are externally routing.

Will they work with an XT 9 speed rapid rise rear mech?

These will work with nearly anything, there is no indexing.
