VNT Elements - This divisible drop handlebar is especially designed for the Pinion and Rohloff twist shifter

By making the handlebar divisible, the Pinion/Rohloff shifter can be easily mounted. Integrated reinforcing ribs allow a brake cable to run neatly beneath the shifter. Made from Alloy 6061 with a sandblasted black anodized finish. This bar has a clamp diameter of 31.8mm and is available in 40, 42 and 44cm widths. The width is measured CTC. The design incorporates a Shallow bend with a low 133mm Drop and 85mm Reach, allowing for an easy low hand placement and improved comfort.

ConsFitting shifters requires some ingenuity
ProsComfortable bend, stiff and the Rohloff shifter works well
The Van Nicholas Rohloff drop bars are commendably stiff, the bends are comfortable and the Rohloff twist shifter is comfortable to use with easy, positive shifting.

Rohloff shifters are designed for MTB handlebars which have a diameter of 22.2mm but road bike brake levers come with a band clamp sized for the road bike standard handlebar diameter of 23.8mm in the grip area. Van Nicholas provide pieces of self adhesive non-slip to pack out the 1.6mm gap between the bars and the shifter band clamp (Shimano Ultegra Di2 in my case). The self adhesive non-slip is very difficult to fit between the bars and the shifter band clamp because of the compound curve of the drops and doesn't want to stay in place despite the adhesive. After some trial and error I found a combination of .25mm brass shim cut to size and a specially machined washer under the band clamp in-hex bolt worked well. This allowed the levers to be repositioned yet bolt up firmly.

Hi .
Can someone help me with best fit screw in bar ends for these handlebars been struggling with these for years to get best fit
In the past, I have found using extra bit of old innertube cut down to give a little more width works best.
Are the Tektro RL520 Aero V Brake Levers compatible with this bar?

Fitting Instructions
By
24 May 2019
Hello,
I have just started to fit these bars but there are zero instructions provided with the bars and none on the Van Nicholas web site. The diameter of the bars under the brake levers (Shimano Ultegra Di2 in this case) is too small so the lever clamp is loose at full engagement. There are two pieces of "Anti Slip Tape Brake Lever" part 57389003) provided with the bars which I assume is to be stuck to the bars so that the levers can be tightened such that the levers don't slip. The anti slip is like course sandpaper on one side and adhesive on the other and does not lend itself to wrapping without wrinkling and distorting. Can you suggest the correct way to fit levers to these bars. Thanks
Hi tere,

You simply need to use the anti slip tape underneath the bar clamp to stop any movement.

Can this handlebar be used with an ordinary stem? (Or is Van Nicholas stem compulsory?)
Hi,

Van Nicholas only recommend using their own stems with these handlebars due to their unique design so we can only recommend using their stems.

Thanks.
