The R.A.T. system is a great idea in theory, but poor in practice, especially on the rear axle. Over time, I found it got harder to remove, but the biggest problem is that you must increase the preload as the axle wears, to hold the wheel firmly. The Robert Axle Project alternative is easy to set up, and instantly solves all the R.A.T. shortcomings. Crucially, it keeps the disk position consistent with the calliper, which was becoming a problem. In fact, it is such a good solution, I have just ordered one for the front axle.

I bought a pair of these axles to replace two R.A.T axles on my Focus Paralane after one of them failed after just a few thousand miles. Whilst these are quite expensive for what they are I can honestly say they are a superb modification for any bike with the RAT axle system.

I’ve found that the bike feels like it brakes better, turns better and after initial caliper re adjustment there is no need to worry about disc rub each time I take the wheels out.

All in all a really nicely engineered solution to a problem that shouldn’t really exist if Focus “Focused” on engineering instead of marketing and USP.
