How did I manage to wear out the other? I blame the Sussex 4x4 drivers churning mud into the roads after carelessly driving onto the verge.

Compatibility With Sg-7R40 Hub

I have an older Shimano Nexus 7-speed SG-7R40, which uses the 3-piece cassette joint (inner rotating shifter ring/pulley, cable fixing ring and outer lockring) type CJ-7S40.
This needs replacing. Will the CJ-NX10 joint be a compatible replacement, and, if so, does it need a different Inner Cable Fixing Bolt Unit, and which? ( Y-74Y-98030, perhaps?).

This cassette joint should indeed be compatible with your hub and you should not need a new inner cable fixing bolt as the one from your hub is the also compatible with this cassette joint.
