I recommend this product
A high quality product. As a fan of hybrid gears involving the Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hub gear, I look forward to incorporating the gear in a new bike in the future. This is the first product where Sturmey-Archer have manufactured the body to hold derailleur sprockets.
Absolutely excellent

I recommend this product
ConsWeight, manual is unclear
ProsSolid, always available shifting
Absolutely spot-on, prompt shifting, with a distinct 'feel' between gears with my 49t front chainring.

Works amazingly with my Shimano STI shifters - though normal operation is reversed (the low lever shifts up, high shifts down). I find I prefer this though - it matches the right shifter now.

Would this be a direct replacement for the SRAM Dual Drive on my Moulton TSR27?
By

It would be a worthy alternative to the Dual Drive. SK 17/08/23
Can I use on tandem
By
16 Aug 2022
Would this hub be strong enough to use with a tandem?
No! The manufacturer seems happy to offer their hubs for e-bike use but we've seen failures already. We think no, you could use it gently but no warranty from us! RT 16/08/2022

Spacer for 7 speed cassette for Sturmey Archer RF3 3Spd Cassette Hub - 36 Hole
By
20 Aug 2020
Your answer on 11 November 2016 said that I need a spacer to use this for a 7 speed cassette, part number 3888. However, a search for this part on the website does not get any useful results. Do you still sell a spacer for this purpose?

28h workaround

Would or could this hub's innards fit in an old SA 28 hole shell?
no, sorry, using different length spokes it's possible to build a 36 hole hub into a 28 hole rim. RT 14/04/2020
can you provide part number for cable that works with this hub.
By

The cable needs to be compatible with the shifter, it depends which shiter you choose. Copy and pate this link:

Chain ring to sprocket ratio
By
26 Jun 2019
Hi, Rohloff and Shimano provide ratios with regard to chain ring size to sprocket size as to not overcharge the hub (e.g. for a Rohloff the chain ring should at least have 1.9 times the number of teeth as the sprocket). What is the ratio for this hub?
Thanks for your help, Christopher
Hi there,

Unfortunately, we have not been provided with kind of information so we would have no idea I'm afraid.

Thanks.
gear range
By
02 Mar 2019
I was very intrigued by this product. Kids' bikes in the 1970s only had this!

I have two questions. What would be the overall gear range when combined with a 8 gear cassette and second question could you still keep a 3 gear cassette on the pedals? Is it possible to fix the additional cable on a standard v brake 26 inch wheel bicycle with th corresponding Sturmey Archer lever thing to change gear?

I understant the hub itself has a 177% gear range.
Hi, the total range will depend on the sprockets chosen, yes you can use a triple front chainwheel too and yes there will be outer cable from the lever to the hub which can be affixed with zip ties
Minimum OLD for this hub
By
16 Jul 2017
I see the specified OLD for this hub is 135 mm, but see that there are double locknouts on the non-drive side. Can you please tell me the minimum OLD that may be achieved following removal of any locknuts and washers that are not absolutely necessary?
Hello,

The minimum you could get it down to is 125mm.

Thanks.
Does It Skip?
By
25 Feb 2017
Hi I currently have this hub made by neos triniti and it skips in 3rd gear. I can't seem to solve it and am considering getting a new wheel altogether built up around this hub. I just want to make sure it's reliable! Have you heard of many problems with this hub?
Hi,

Sturmey Archer 3spds are some of the most reliable hubs ever made, this version with the cassette freewheel has more going on so will have a higher risk of developing an issue but we never really had an issues in all of the ones we've sold.

Thanks.
Shifter Recomendation
By
11 Jan 2017
You haven't answered my question above

Which shifter do you recommend for this hub?
Which ones from your range do you recommend?

I have no experience of MTBs, so I'm in the dark about this.

I want to use this hub and use dropped handlebars. If a bar end shifter isn't available, what are my options?

Thanks and regards,
Mick.
Hi,

The reason I have not recommended an individual shifter is that we sell a larger number of compatible options that are all of high enough quality that can be used. Unfortunately as you want to run drop bars it does mean that there aren't any compatible options. The shifters suitable for use with this hub are all either twistshifters or trigger shifters, neither of which can be used with drop bars i'm afraid.

Thanks.
Shifter Recommendation
By
09 Jan 2017
Which shifter do you recommend for this hub?
I would like a bar end shifter. Do they exist?
Do you do them?

Thanks.
Hi,

This hub is designed to be used with a standard MTB type 3spd left hand shifter usually used for a front derailleur. You would not be able to use a bar end shifter as these are almost always friction rather than indexed so do not have 3 set gear positions which you require for this hub. You will need to use a gear shifter with MTB cable pull and 3 set positions; these will normally include trigger shifters and twist shifters.

Thanks.
Do You Do The Cs-Rf3 In 28H?
By
08 Jan 2017
I would like this hub in 28h to go into my existing wheelset.

Can you get hold of one in 28h?

Thanks.
Hi,

Unfortunately we are not able to get hold of one in 28h as Sturmey Archer Europe only bring the 36h version into Europe.

Thanks.
Can I Get Sturmey Archer Cs-Rf3 Black 28 Holes
By
04 Jan 2017
Hi,

Unfortunately the black version of the CS-RF3 is not available from Sturmey Archer Europe so Sturmey Archer's UK distributor can't order it and as they can't get it we can't get it from them I'm afraid.

Thanks.
Would A Seven Speed Cassette Be Compatible?
By
11 Nov 2016
Hi,

You would need to fit a spacer to allow this hub to be compatible with a 7spd cassette. We stock these and are SJSC part number 3888.

Thanks.

By

It Is Listed As 8&9 Speed, Would A 10 Speed Cassette Work?
By
28 Mar 2016
Hi,

8, 9 and 10spd cassettes all fit to the same size freehub body so you could easily fit a 10spd cassette to this hub if you wanted to.

Thanks.
Is It Possible To Have This Hub Threaded For A Karasawa Drag Brake
By
22 Mar 2016
Can this hub (left side of course) be threaded by SJS Cycles to accomodate your Karasawa screw on drag brake?

Regards,

Bart
Hi,

We are not able to thread any hubs in this way I'm afraid and with this hub there would not be enough space to get enough threads either.

Thanks.
Hello Can You Get Hold Of The Black Version Of This Hub?
By
06 Nov 2014
Hi,

We're not able to get hold of this exact model in black, but we do have the disc brake version (RK3) available in black in either 32 or 36 hole options. You don't require a disc brake to use it though, you can build it up into a normal rim and use it with rim brakes if you wish.

Thanks.
Gear Shifter For Sturmey Archer Rf3 3Spd Cassette Hub
By
03 Aug 2014
Hi, I have aTrice Classic recumbent trike, which originally had a Sram Dual Drive 9x3 hub + derailleur gears fitted, but the hub gears broke irreparabl some time ago, so have been running it with ordinary derailleur gears & a cassette hub.
I'm very interested in the Sturmey Archer Rf3 3Spd Cassette Hub 36H, but would also need a gear shifter for the hub gears. A twistgrip shifter would probably not fit, but a lever type shifter would be suitable. What shifters do you have, & how much?

Many thanks!
Hi,

This hub despite being a hub gear actually uses a standard MTB style 3spd shifter, so any normal shifter used for the front derailleur on a conventional geared system will be compatible. So this means any shifter by Shimano or Sram will work fine.

Thanks.
