Details
New for 2016, this is the battery version of the popular Secula mudguard mounted dynamo light. This light is compact and incorporates the LineTec technology. A prism system which creates an exceptionally bright light crown powered by one high powered LED which is very distinctive due to its 'spatial' shape. This enables other traffic participants to better estimate the distance to the bicycle. The elegant transparent glass on the circumference shines bright red when in use. It also has a centrally integrated rear reflector and is supplied with 2 x AAA batteries.

LineTec - Light strip for more safety

LineTec is a light technology featuring a lens system designed by B&M. The punctual light of one high power LED is spread up to become a wide strip of light which shines homogenously. Why is that important? In the past, as another road user approached a bicycle at night from behind all that could be seen was a single point of light emitting from the rear light. This meant that the distance to the rider could only be estimated inadequately. B&M wanted to address the need to accurately estimate this distance providing a capacity for the human eye to register the spatial relationship to the rider, especially in the dark. Hence LineTec was created. A rear light sending out a LineTec light strip emits 'spatial light' allowing other road users to estimate the distance to the rider much better and more quickly.

- Mudguard mounted
- Single high powered LED
- Exceptionally bright LineTec light crown

I recommend this product
ConsPlastic feels a little fragile, batteries have dislodged before.
ProsHighly visible both when on (led light) and off (rear reflector)
Excellent mudguard mounted rear reflector with becomes a led light. I've a couple of these now. One is going on six years old and going strong. Light feels stable, the batteries have dislodged from the electric tabs before when bashed around, maybe some well placed foam would help, but this is such an irregular issue I've never felt the need.

The Secula mudguard mounted light is a good design and is highly visible.
I mounted it 50 mm above the existing mudguard rear reflector. I removed the rear wheel, drilled two 5 mm holes, one for the plastic peg and one for a 5 mm x 12 mm long stainless steel dome head bolt. Inside the light I used a washer and nylon but. I change the batteries before they go flat and inspect the light for corrosion especially as it’s on a mudguard

ConsSensitive button, may be difficult to fit.
ProsSimple, elegant, bright, light-weight, robust, good battery life.
This rear light make an excellent, permanent addition to mudguards and fits the SKS brand of mudguards with relative ease. It is bright and a set of good batteries will last a long time. I've also found that it can be fitted to a bike using one of those plastic reflector mounts that are commonly supplied with new bikes.
The only issues that I've had are the sensitive button that other reviewers have mentioned and the fact that I didn't get any warning of an impending battery fail (the light didn't gradually dim, it abruptly failed). Oh, and if the clearance between your tyre and the mudguard is less than about 5mm, you may have to shorten the end of the bolt with a hack saw.

ConsIt is a little plasticy
ProsSpatial shape LED
Very happy with this light.

The battery warning light is functional and the LED circular shape is bright.

I buy into the idea that a spatial shape give better depth perception and also is visually distinctive with out resorting to

ProsSimple, bright and robust
Easy to fit, bright and good side and rear visibility. Also resists water pretty well, which my previous mudguard light didn't (and failed after one week of British winter). Good backup for other rear lights that can be obscured by panniers - it's position right at the back means it's always visible.

Bright, But Very Eay To Turn-On Accidently

ConsToo easy to accidently turn it on.
ProsBright and permanently attached.
This light is very bright and permanently attached to my mudguard, so always ready. This was the main attraction.

However, it is very easy to accidently turn it on. Just moving the bike around the shed or when parking, it only takes the slightest knock to turn it on. I think that this is a design flaw.

ConsOnly on or off - no flashng mode
ProsSmall and light
As previous reviewer has said, pretty easy to mount. I made an additional small hole in the SKS mudguard with my penknife for the little plastic lug at the rear of the light (stops it swivelling when you tighten the mounting nut). It's on my wife's bike but I shall certainly be adding one to mine soon.

ConsNone
ProsCompact, well made and highly visible.
I was fed up with having to unclip my rear light every time I locked my bike up and so having a neat, fixed option works very well. It also means there is always a light ready to use when I get caught out by the earlier dark evenings.

Could This Be Fitted In Place Of The Existing Reflector On Sks Mudguards?
By
01 Jul 2017
The existing reflector seems to be in the exact place you would want to fit this light (i.e. at the lowest fixing.) It also seems to be riveted in place. Is there a trick to remove the reflector and fit this light?
Hello,

The rivets on the mudguard are only for the mounts, The reflector is in fact screwed in from behind. If this screw is removed it will come off. The light in question will fit on to these mudguards.

Thanks.

According to the B&M website the part no. of what you describe should be 331BS?
Hi,

This is just the part number that comes from our supplier, this is the same light as shown on B&M's website.

Thanks.
Modes On B&M Secula Mudguard Battery
By
27 Nov 2016
Modes on your part number 398111? Apart from on/off, does it have standlight, senso or flashing? Also, what batteries?
Hi,

This light is permanently on so it does not have a flashing or senso function, also as it is permanently on it does not have a standlight function. This light requires two AAA batteries, there is a set supplied.

Thanks.
Hi, Does This Item Fit The 2 Holes On Sks Mudguards?
By
03 Dec 2015
Hi,

This light should be able to fit to the holes already in your SKS mudguards, but if it is required you are able to drill additional holes into SKS mudguards to provide additional mounting positions.

Thanks.
