ConsBenefits from a rack.
ProsBritish made, simple classic styling
Carradice saddle bags are well made , tough and durable. The Barley is in my opinion the perfect size for day trips. Enough space for a spare tube, tools and pump, food , spare clothing layers and if you must, some 'Technology'.
Other reviews have commented that the bag can be fiddly to remove, however this can be greatly improved using a Bagman QR rack . The rack also helps the saddlebag sit in a more upright position and improves stability and security of the bag contents. The combined weight of bag and rack is 'fair' but not considerable, If you don't feel the need to weigh every bicycle component.

ConsSteel furniture with sharp edges, no fastex
ProsGood size, material
Green is too deep, looks like black, but all other things are good. All these straps are very slow to open/close, but they look great.

wanted one of these to finish off the vintage bike ready for Eroica and Velo Retro and it definitely looks the part. Big enough for what we need for a days ride and not too big that the OH will fill it full of unnecessary stuff. very well made and should last a few years. Service and price from SJS was excellent

Prosconstruction, looks, size
Green Carradice classic bags are probably the most stylish looking bike bags I've encountered so far. That combined with the fact that the bag is built like a tank, makes them pretty much #1 to recommend if you're looking for a both stylish AND sturdy saddle bag. The Barley is just the right size for day trips for me: you can fit a bunch of basic bike tools / spare parts, a sturdy lock, and a small amount of change clothes or other essentials in the bag easily.

My only complaint is that while the bag attaches safely to the Brooks saddlebag loops, the leather loop mechanism means that the bag is a bit clumsy to open & close, and not too quick to take off the bike. So if you want to have something you can take with you every time you leave your bike, it would probably be better to check out some of the quick release models.

Prosfunctional, stylish, repairable
After much umming and arring I finally went for a Carradice Barley Saddlebag. Seemed a good size for all one's bits and pieces for a ride round town, to work or a daytrip. Looks even better in real life, really nice, and well put together. Good price on SJS.

The attachment options with these things can be a little confusing (hence my long deliberation). I went with a quick release clamp system, also from SJS. It fits under the saddle and then you can take the bag on and off easily. Works well. Don't know yet how strong/reliable it will prove to be.

May go with a 'bagman' support another time (also bought a bigger Nelson saddlebag) for extra...er....support! As other reviews have noted, the bag does rub just a little on the back of the thighs (which the support would prevent by holding the bag away from the seatpost) but thus far I haven't found this a problem.

Well worth looking into if you're not keen on panniers and/or backpacks.
Very Nice Looking Bag, And Good Quality.

ProsConstruction, design, size
Just got the Barley and installed last week on my 1981 Miyata with a Brooks saddle. It fits well beneath the saddle, I can just feel it with the back of my thighs when sitting far back in the saddle, not a problem as far as I'm concerned. Good bag for day trips, just did a 50 mile ride this morning and got a chance to flip the bag and saddle in the dirt a bit as I changed a flat. It brushed off nice and is now broken it. I did use some leather food on the straps when it came in to soften them a bit. They buckle fine. Great looks and a bag I hop to have for a long time. Doing a 102 mile race in may and riders score points for carrying their own food, and change of clothes for the end. L'Eroica Grand Junction to Glenwood Springs, CO. The Barley will be full for that!

Great looking, excellent construction. To give an idea of size: The main compartment fit my gore tex rain coat, rain pants, tee shirt, and pair of jeans. Each side pocket will fit a tee shirt as well (although just barely). To attach to a Brooks, you use leather straps that run around a wooden dowel inside the bag. This makes a very stiff attachment that doesn't sway from side to side.

I've now got three Carradice saddle bags of various sizes. Unless you need more than 20L capacity they are the best option and they last for ever. SJS price & service very good as always.

ConsThigh slap, but that's easily fixed
ProsGood size, looks good, easy to fit
Went for this after years of struggling with more modern designs which generally try to be too fancy for their own good. This is a really good, solid bit of kit, just the right size to take a clean shirt and a few odds and ends for the daily commute, and perfect for longer day rides.

Only drawback is that it tends to touch back of thighs unless a bit of thought is put into mounting it.

Can You Confirm That The Carradice Barley Is 7 Litres?
By
10 Mar 2015
On the Carradice website it says the Carradice Barley has a capacity of 9 litres, yet it is listed on the SJS Cycles website as being 7 litres. Can you confirm which it is, please?
Hi,

I can only assume this is an error on Carradice's website as we've always bought them from them as 7ltr bags and always sold them as 7ltr bags (for over 10 years), the dimensions on Carradice's website line up with the bags being 7ltr also. To make sure I compared the bags physically with another 9ltr bag in Carradice's range and the 9ltr bag was a large amount bigger making me very confident that the Barley is a 7ltr bag.

Thanks.
