These mudguards use the standard fitting to frames/forks with mudguard eyelets.

Rear guard same as short version. Front guard 140mm longer than short version.

Please note these mudguards are now coming pre drilled.

ConsNo instructions
ProsSolid, well made, rattle free. Reasonable price for the quality
I know they are only mudguards, but its not clear at all where all of the bits are supposed to go. Do the stays fit inside or outside of the mudguard, where do the washers fit, where does the large rubber washer go?
Just print off an A4 and include please.
Luckily the manufacturer answers all of these questions on their website with some very clear diagrams. Seehttps://berthoudcycles.fr/en/636-pair-of-stainless-fenders-700c-x-60-front-long-hardware.html

Great quality well made with sturdy stays. You need to also buy the rear mud guard fitting bracket to fix to a rear brake bridge, although you could make one yourself but it wouldn't be curved to fit the guard. Need some patience to fit correctly and need to drill your own holes to fit the rear bridge bracket and mud flaps/rear reflector of you want. They don't come with rear reflector or flaps. I advise fitting the rear guard to Mark up where you want to drill the holes for the bridge support, then remove the guard, drill the holes then refit. The stays are quite long and need cutting with a hacksaw and filing the sharp ends. When fitted these are secure and rattle free. They are barely noticably heavier than a pair of plastic guards which I replaced, which rattled constantly.

ProsLooks good and are a nice fit
They are not only good looking they fit the arc of a 700c wheel unlike the plastic variety where you end up with a varying unsightly gap between tyre and guard.
Fabulous!

ProsGreat fit, quiet, and shiny!
Yes, they require some patience and a bit of skill to fit, but you'll be glad you took your time. Once on these babies are gorgeous. All my cycle buddies are envious. However good they look, they work even better. (I think they have more wrap/curve over the tyre perpindicularly?) They are extremely quiet without a hint of rattle some plastic & aluminum ones can make. The galvenised stays make a huge difference. Now... I know the follks at SJS say 40c widths can handle at 35 c tyres, but I think you'd be hard pressed. Not so much width wise, but the sidewall profile is taller on a 35c tyre. I'm running 32c Gatorskin Hardshells and I could not fit a larger tyre. Of course, frame size matters too, but just be cautious. I highly recommend these mudguards. Get 'em.

ProsBeautiful, well made
I bought these mudguards for a classic-style touring bike. It takes a fair bit of work to get these mudguards installed, so they're not for the faint-hearted, but these things scream

Conspain to fit.
Prosgreat quality
these are really nicely made mudguards. I bought them to replace some knackered sks thermoplastics.

you should be aware that they are a bit of a nightmare to fit depending on your frame. My 80's raleigh racer (which has mudguard eyes) requires an extra bridge clamp to fit the front, and an extra p-clamp to fit the rear. All this you'll need to work out yourself because there are no fitting instructions. I'm still not entirely convinced i'll be able to get the rear on at all, but we'll see.

SJS it would be great if you could get some fitting instructions on your site, plus a warning about frame compatibility and extra parts that might be required...

ConsA bit of patience and ingenuity required to get a perfect fit.
ProsDurable, light and stylish
I was able to fit these by using the fixings supplied plus some improvised mounting brackets to cater for the lack of pre-drilled mounting holes on my frame. The bike looks great and rides quiet as a result!

I see that you recommend using a second, vertical stay on the rear guard to reduce "bouncing.
What additional parts to would I need to secure two
sets of stays to frame eyelets?
Thanks.
Hello & thank you for your enquiry.
Recommended as a second vertical stay for the rear is - 22594s40 Gilles Berthoud mudguard stays & fitting kit.
Hope this assists.
Kind regards, PC 13/6/23.
Do you just sell the front mudguard on it's own?
By
04 Mar 2022
Hi,

My front mudguard snapped yesterday, so looking to replace it with a long 700c x 50mm front. I don't need any of the fittings/accessories. Is this something I could buy?

Thanks, Paul
Please email [email protected] as this is something we might be able to help with.

How long is the front mudguard?
By

I'm looking to buy the longest front guard possible to protect my feet from spray. To help me compare with other metal guards, can you please tell me how many centimetres the front guard measures along its circumference? Thanks.
Hi thank you for your enquiry, it is 87cm

What width is best for fitting on 27 x 1 1/4 wheels - 40mm or 50mm?
By
23 Oct 2020
Please note these are designed for 700c wheels, so maybe slightly oversized for your wheels. 1 1/4 inches is 31.75mm so it seems the 40mm mudguard is going to be the best fitting option.

Hi,

What size would you recommend for the Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 700c x 40?

Thanks.
Hi, I would suggest 700 x 50 to get some clearance. Thanks
Is there a pre-drilled hole for attaching a fender mounted rear light?
By
25 Jan 2020
Hi
Thank you for your enquiry, unfortunately there is no pre-drilled hole for a fender light, you would need to do this yourself.

Best choice for 700x38 winter tires
By
02 Dec 2019
Is the 700x40 a good fit for 700x38 winter tires w/ studs?

Thank you
No, that would only leave you 1mm clearance - not accounting for studs. You would need the 50mm.

Thanks - 03/12/19
Can these be used with 650b*47 tyres?
By

yes, you should be able to use these fine.

By

These are suitable for disc or rim brakes.

Are these supposed to be blue?
By
13 Mar 2019
I got these in the post today. Wasn't expecting blue. Can I return them and get a refund?
Hi, the blue colour is from the protective film over the polished surface, if you remove this they will be silver as in the picture. If you want to return them please contact our customer service desk. Thanks
Mudflap
By
26 Feb 2019
Which mudflap would you use for the front mudguard 40mm?
SJS Cycles part number : 27781BLK would be suitable, or pretty much anything if we are honest! you will just have flap sticking out the side - which could be trimmed, or a flap thats a bit narrow.

Thanks - 26/02/19
can i use them with 25 X 700 tyres on a Raleigh Criterium sport
By
29 Aug 2018
Have a new road bike and need mudguards for the winter
the seller advised on a few sets which I didn't really like.
What would you advise for the above model, with 25 X 700 road tyres..
You can, but they will be a bit wide aesthetically and you would need to check frame clearances.

Thanks
Can I use this for Pashley Countryman ?
By
17 Jul 2018
Hi

Unfortunately we do not stock Pashley bikes so we wouldnt be able to guarantee that these would be a perfect fit. The narrow option is 700 x 40mm so you would need to check the bike to see if it has enough clearance.

Regards

Will they fit a Cube Attain GTC Pro Disc?
By
24 Nov 2017
Hi,

As we don't sell your bike we don't know what fittings it has or what the clearance is like. If your bike has sufficient clearance for these guards and full mudguard eyelets then they should fit okay.

Thanks.
Is the brake bridge fitting (part 28520) necessary?
By
24 Aug 2017
If my bike has eyelets behind the bb housing, as well as on the chainstay - will I still need the brake bridge adapter (28520)?
Hi,

It is recommended that you still fit the brake bridge bracket as well to fully support the guards.

Thanks.
Ok with Big Apple 50-622?
By
24 Aug 2017
Is there sufficient clearance if I would use the 60mm Berthoud with Schwalbe Big Apple 50-622 (2")? Perhaps even the 2.15" inch version?
Hi,

There would be sufficient clearance with these 60mm Giles guards and a set of Big Apple 50-622 (2") tyres, but we would not recommend using them with any wider tyres.

Thanks.
Will These (700X40) Fitt With Panaracer Pasela Sjs #1026
By
05 Feb 2017
Hi,

Although the guards are wide enough to cover those tyres without having your bike here to test there is no way of us knowing the stays will be long enough to clear the 27" tyres as they are larger than 700c. There is normally an amount of adjustment available so you should be okay, but we can't say for sure without testing.

Thanks.
Weight & Width / Clearance
By
20 Dec 2016
What is the total weight of these guards with the stay kit please? And would a 50mm wide set give sufficient clearance over 38x650b tyres? Thanks, Fraser
Hi, the 50mm wide mudguards weigh 785g. There is no reason as to why they shouldn't provide enough cover on your 38 x 650b tyres.

Hi - i think from what i have read they don't come with everything most people will need - what can you suggest for:
- bigger metal washer for 1 1/8
Hi,

We wouldn't have anything to recommend for the large washer I'm afraid but the SKS brake bridges are the best. They are strong and don't cost too much.

Thanks.
Will These Fit Kenesis Race Light T2, Thanks
By
14 Oct 2016
Hi,

Although we have never sold Kenesis bikes so can't say for sure, looking at images of your bike it appears to have a normal arrangement of mudguard fixing points so these mudguards should fit. You will only be able to use the 40mm width though as there will be limited clearance between your brakes.

Thanks.
Stainless Steel Mudguards

Do these fit 28" «narrow» wheels, such as on a hybrid? Otherwise I’m amazed, I thought metal mudguards were a thing of the past! :)
Hi,

As long as you select a suitable width these mudguards should be suitable for use with 28" tyres like those found on a hybrid.

Thanks.
Giles Berthoud Mud Guard Stays And Fittings
By
28 Dec 2014
Hi there, I see you sell the GB stays, bolts and fittings etc separately. Do any fittings come with the mudguards themselves?

Thank you.
Hi,

All of the required fittings should be supplied with the mudguards.

Thanks.
